About The Red Sub

What Is The Red Sub?

The Red Sub is a free browser-based arcade game. You pilot a red submarine through a series of deep-sea obstacles, trying to survive long enough to reach the ultimate goal: 1,000,000 points. The controls are simple and easy to learn, making it a great pick-up-and-play game for all ages.

The game is entirely free to play. No account needed, no download required — just open the page and dive in. It runs directly in your browser on desktop, tablet, or mobile (landscape orientation on mobile).

How to Play

The controls are intentionally simple:

The progress bar at the bottom of the screen shows how far you are from the 1,000,000 point finish line. Your personal best score is saved automatically in your browser.

The Story Behind the Game

The Red Sub was created as a passion project — a simple, easy-to-learn arcade game designed for players of all ages, wrapped in a spy-thriller submarine aesthetic. The goal was to build something genuinely polished using nothing but vanilla web technologies: no game engines, no frameworks, just HTML5 Canvas and the Web Audio API.

The procedurally generated music plays in a minor key that accelerates as you progress, creating a tension that mirrors the increasing difficulty of the obstacles. Every visual element — the spinning propeller, the bubble trail, the explosion particles — is drawn programmatically, frame by frame.

The game took shape over many iterations of tuning the physics (gravity, lift, max velocity) and the obstacle generation algorithm to find the right balance between challenge and fairness. The result is a game that is hard to master but always feels like it was your own fault when you crash.

Accessibility & Compatibility

The Red Sub runs in any modern browser without plugins or installations. It has been tested on Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on both desktop and mobile. On mobile phones, the game requires landscape orientation for the best experience — a rotation prompt appears if you open it in portrait mode.

The mute button (🔊) in the top-left corner lets you silence the music at any time, without affecting gameplay.
